Hymns for Lent Number 1

During Lent, I’ll be writing six hymns that capture the spirit of reflection for the season. I will publish them on Sunday mornings. All the hymns will be set to well known tunes, so they will be easily shareable and singable upon reading.

Hymn 1 is titled Sit in Silence and in Prayer and uses the same tune as What a Friend We Have in Jesus (Converse).

Are you weary of the clamour?

Is there tension in the air?

Are you fearful or disgusted?

Sit in silence and in prayer.

Have you been betrayed or outcast?

Have you wounds too deep to bear?

Is your anger red and burning?

Sit in silence and in prayer.

Do you wish one ones destruction?

Have you felt a lack of care?

Is your screaming empty effort?

Wait in silence and in prayer.

Are you sick of expectations?

Is your heart too weak to care?

Does hope feel timid and unstable?

Wait in silence and in prayer.

All our worries are but ashes

All our bodies dust with air.

Brief our troubles and our triumphs

Be in silence and in prayer.

Let this knowledge be a comfort:

Earth will pass without a care

The love of God remains eternal

Be in silence and in prayer.
