A Safe Space

Photo by Adam Dutton

Sometimes you find someone who makes you feel so safe that you can share anything. I have a few friends like that, and I am always thankful for them.

We sat at the river

And I watched the slow sparkling of its waters

Dancing in the fading light

As the red of sunset was just grazing the sky

The night falling, which I longed for;

It would mean I could think of other things

And maybe we could laugh.

You were quiet, but I didn’t mind

Because I was quiet too

Sitting with the trauma we had witnessed.

And in that moment

Though we were the only two in silence

I felt a perfect, easy peace within me

Because of the space you hold for me

and the safety of your presence.
