Watch and Wait

I dug a plant out of the yard and put it in the garden

Thinking to save it from the mower.

I’m not sure the transplant will take.

I might have yanked off too many roots

Or maybe it just doesn’t like the garden dirt as well

As the dirt that was in the front yard.

Perhaps it’s not getting as much sun now

The garden light is completely different.

I’ll keep watering it, hoping that it’s just in shock

And it will grow or it will die.

And the trouble with it dying is that I’ll never know for sure

If saving it from the mower was the right choice.

Should I have let it risk being cut down

Every week this summer

Rather than rescue it, only to endanger it in a new way?

I can’t ask a plant what it wants.

All I can do is watch and wait

And do the best I can.
