During Lent, I’ll be writing six hymns that capture the spirit of reflection for the season. I will publish them on Sunday mornings. All the hymns will be set to well known tunes, so they will be easily shareable and singable upon reading.
Hymn 5 is titled To You Who Rest in God’s Abode and takes its inspiration from Psalm 91. It uses the same tune as O God, Our Help in Ages Past (ST ANNE), but can also be sung to any tune that uses the common meter.
To you who rests in God’s abode
And take your shelter there
Say to the Most High, Lord of All
My trust is yours fore’er.
For God will help you through the night
Protect you from the snare
Deliver you from illness and
Shield you in God’s great care.
Your terror will be but a dream
The darkness and the death
That seeks to destroy all your strength
Cannot your God’s strength best.
Your foes will fall around your feet
The wicked ones will fail
Because you dwell with God, your God
You’ll find that you’ll prevail.
No evil and no plague will dare
To come near to your home
Angels will lift you on their wings
Your foot will strike no stone.
The lion and the cobra each
Will be no match at all.
Because God sets God’s love on you
God answers when you call.
God honors you, delivers you,
Will satisfy you long
God gives you salvation and life
For to God you belong.
