Medusa with the Head of Perseus, Luciano Garbati, 2008

When I look in the mirror

I wish to see snakes growing from my head

Slits in my eyes that betray

A forked tongue behind my teeth

Confirmation that I have to the power

To kill with my glare.

Yet what good is it to me

To turn him to stone

If it means I would become the thing

He already thinks I am?

And why do I wish to be a gorgon

When it is he who is the monster?
